Information Age J.O.A.T. (Jack Of All Trades) seeks compatible employer
OK, I'm desperate for a job right now. It seems my lovely wife's employers have decided that keeping her on past Tuesday makes no business sense to them, so they're letting her go.

This means that I need outside work NOW. My home-based business is not taking off at a speed that will help take up the slack and must be mostly abandoned for the sake of survival. Any help and pointers to specific jobs would be appreciated. My resume is available in multiple formats at my resume page. Hers is not up to date so we'll be rewriting it shortly.

As for what I have and can do:
  • I can do QA work at black box-level on almost any platform. I have taken C++ & Java classes, so I can do some grey- and white-box testing for products in those languages.

  • I also have experience doing desktop publishing (PageMaker and InDesign), having multiple publications from daily newsletters to posters to books in various paid and volunteer positions for several years.

  • I have Mad Skillz with Photoshop (witness my artwork at Broken Hexagon Studios, where all the artwork was done on Photoshop) and am competent with Illustrator. I think the last two items could qualify me as a Graphic Artist.

  • I have acted as a webmaster for a non-profit corporation for 3+ years, updating web pages and supervising a small staff. I speak HTML, CSS & Java, and I read Javascript.

  • I can think around corners and find unique solutions to problems, even in areas I haven't had training in.

  • I am also talented in translating tech-speak to user and vice-versa.

What I don't have and can't do:
  • I don't have any degrees. I have spent an accumulated 10 years in various colleges, learning all manner of things, but have not received any degrees - primarily due to the need to continue eating occasionally. That said, I have taken multiple courses in computer science, programming, linguistics, communications, translation, paralegal, and science.

  • I don't have any certifications, though I have fixed many computer (both PC & Macs) and can set up basic configurations on most platforms up to and including setting them up on networks. Again, there's the eating thing that got in the way of the paperwork.

  • I don't seem to be very good at running a business, which is what I've been trying to do for the last couple of years.

  • While I can communicate effectively, I have great difficulty in saying things that are not true. I even find it difficult to use social lying in my speech. This can at times be something of a detriment, but I have found that most people like being told the truth.

What I want:
I want a job that makes me glad to be going to work. Barring that, I want a job that will pay the bills and let us build up something of a reserve in case emergencies happen. Make me an offer, and we'll talk.

Job call
Bay Casino gaming is looking for blackjack dealers. This is job that pays at least $60 for max 4 hours of work.

The blackjack is easy...look up the rules on Yahoo Games or whatever if you need to...you get the hang of it quick, just be familiar with the possibilities like insurance, doubling down, and splitting. All easy.

They are specifically looking for someone for this coming Saturday. The gig is in Palo Alto, from 7-10. This is only 3 hours work that will pay at least $60.

You do need to bring your own cards and tux shirt, red bowtie and cummerbund is required....Sometimes they have extra tie/cummerbunds and the shirt you should be able to get cheaply enough. Outfit and gas mileage is tax deductible if you earn enough.

This is an easy, sometimes fun way to earn a little extra money. You get to see fancy hotels/mansions, can get tips, and sometimes we're fed.

The season is slowing down but they have this Saturday, and again later in the month. December is their busy season with Christmas parties. I've been doing this for 2 years and it's definitely been worth my while..you meet some cool people.

If anyone is interested, please let me know!

Looking for a job: Doc Control
Hi all,
I am recently as of last Thursday out of a job. My last company let me go due to running out of money and had to make some very tough decisions.

I am on a "Unpaid Furlow"... basically an unpaid employee. At least they are paying for my Medical/Dental til Dec 31st. I can claim unemployment insurance, but I would rather night. They couldn't afford to give me a 'package' so they gave me that instead. Better then kicked to the curb!

Welp, If any company out there is looking for a Doc Control/ECO Analyst type of employee, I am your person! Software prefered, but I can do hardware as well.

Thanks guys.

..here's the deal.

You are being called upon in an effort to take a cost effective, pertinent and trustworthy opinion poll. You can rest assured that your invaluable opinion would be taken with multiple pinches of salt...actually make that multiple tons.

I have been offered a position at an IT Consulting company, wherein I shall be undergoing a 2 week intensive training in Data Warehousing. Upon successful completion of said course, yours truly will be placed at a client's site. Pay isn't that good, (weekly paycheck: $42,000 p.a. / 2080 hrs * no. of hours worked that week) but can't complain as I have no experience, and therefore no bargaining power.
The company is based in NJ, so I can escape high NY taxes! Yay!

I would like to know if you think IT Consulting/Data Warehousing/IT Consulting in data warehousing is a good way to start off a career.... and any other pearls of wisdom you may be inclined to share.

Job hunting, but not for me (for once)
So for the first time, I'd like to ask everyone to fire up their various nepotism nets, not for me but for a pal. This friend of mine (a recent acquaintance, yes, but a good one) is in desperate need of a job, as he and his wife are looking at losing their only working car if things don't turn around for them quickly.

His name is Ben Wilson, he's a very funny and outgoing ex-Army Ranger, whip-smart and a gamer on top of all that (so how can you go wrong?). He's worked mostly as a mortgage loan funder, but would like to branch out into real estate management.

Can anyone help out? I'd love to get some good karma rolling for Ben, so if you know of a lending institution that needs a savvy manager, send them his way, wouldja?
